I have been studying and practicing John Barnes Myofascial Release since 2004. For several years I have been considered an Advanced John Barnes Therapist due to the number of classes and hours of class time including working alongside John in his clinic.
Fascia is a connective tissue found throughout our body. We have large bands of fascia; plantar fascia, the IT band to name just two that may be familiar to you.Ā Fascia surrounds each muscle fiber, fibril, and muscle group as well as nerves, blood, and lymph vessels. Fascia also surrounds each cell in our body. It is also intra-cellular!
When an injury, emotional trauma, surgery or wound occurs, the fascia can tighten down and create dysfunction for joint range of motion, pain when pressing on nerves, and decreased blood and lymph flow. Fascial restrictions do not show up on x-ray or other diagnostics. Hopefully that will change in the future. If you have pain, have trouble getting diagnosed, it may be due to myofascial restrictions. Many doctors are aware of the importance of myofascial release for pain. You may however need to bring it up for discussion.
John Barnes MFR differs from other MFR techniques as it is gentle and slow, allowing the fascial restrictions to release without forcing. It is very relaxing to receive. This slower technique is very effective. John Barnes MFR is not painful. Clients report sensations of stretching, tingling, warmth, and prickliness to name a few. This is just the fascia opening up and rehydrating.
If you are experiencing unresolved pain, give me a call to schedule an appointment!
